Symposium: Responsibility - an Illusion?
in the series: "Symposium Tower of Senses", October 14-16, 2011, Nuremberg
This year's symposium of the science museum "Tower of Senses" is entitled "Resonsibility - an illusion? Morality, guilt, punishment and the idea of man of brain research". The event addresses the general public. Renowned scientists from various disciplines, such as Niels Birbaumer (BFNT Freiburg-Tübingen), will discuss the following society-relevant topics (translated quotation from the organizers' advertisement):
"What will become of accountability and culpability, if free will is merely a pipe dream? Does someone who cannot act against his/her neuronal setup deserve punishment? Not only criminals and psychopaths, but all of us are brain-controlled. Especially exciting is the application of neuroscientific methods to failing social behavior: Which disturbances are predictable and under which conditions is prevention possible? What causes relapse and which therapies can help?
Beyond the group of brain scientists, physicians, lawyers and philosophers, it is important for society whether there is a demoralisation of the law and how responsibility and punishment can be uncoupled from the concept of free will. When the view into the brain alters the conditions of social life, various experts should be consulted - but also each individual brain owner."
