The Bernstein Network Computational Neuroscience was established in Germany in 2004. Its core elements are the Bernstein Centers for Computational Neuroscience in Berlin, Freiburg, Göttingen, Heidelberg-Mannheim, Munich and Tübingen. The network is complemented by 'Bernstein Partner' projects, consisting of five Bernstein Groups and eleven Bernstein Collaborations. The annual Bernstein Award allows young researchers to establish their own, independent research group. The Bernstein Focus: Neurotechnology in the regions Berlin, Frankfurt/Main, Freiburg/Tübingen and Göttingen extends the network towards technological applications. A further Bernstein Focus: Neuronal Basis of Learning with eight collaborative projects tackles application-relevant issues of learning and memory.

The Bernstein Coordination Site centrally manages and coordinates the network's activities.

Through a German node (G-node), the Bernstein Networks is connected to the 'International Neuroinformatics Coordinating Facility' (INCF).

Collaboration with the USA is supported by German - US-American Collaborations.

The speakers of all network partners form the Project Committee. The head of the Project Committee acts as additional scientific contact person of the network.
