For the first time this year, the Swartz foundation awards fellowships to ten doctoral students and post docs of the Bernstein Network Computational Neuroscience to allow their participation at the annual meeting of the Sloan-Swartz Centers in Princeton (New Jersey) from July, 19-22, 2008. Each fellowship includes a grant for travel expenses of 1,000 USD and free board and lodging during the meeting. This is the first step towards a transatlantic exchange program between the Bernstein Network and the Sloan-Swartz Centers, the leading research institutes in the field of computational Neuroscience in the USA. In return, it is planned to offer fellowships to American doctoral students and post docs for the participation at the coming Bernstein Symposium in October 2008 in Munich. The exchange program was initiated by Hirsh Cohen (Scientific Director of the Swartz Foundation) and Andreas Herz (Coordinator of the Bernstein Center Munich).
In 1994, Jerome Swartz established the Swartz Foundation for Computational Neuroscience, to explore the application of principles from mathematics, physics and computer engineering to traditional neurobiology. The Foundation supports research initiatives at five US-American Sloan/Swartz Centers for Theoretical Neurobiology as well as research and education at six further selected locations in the US. The Swartz Foundation also sponsors conferences and workshops in the field of Computational Neuroscience. Jerome Swartz is a successful entrepreneur and inventor. He led the development of the first hand-held barcode laser scanner and co-founded the company Symbol Technologies, the leading supplier of mobile data capture and delivery equipment.
