Frank Schäffel (Eberhard Karls University of Tuebingen and Bernstein Center) receives the award for many years of outstanding work in the field of myopia research. "There are hardly any researchers who have made similar contributions to this field within the past 25 years", said the appraisal. Amongst other work, Frank Schaeffel's classic paper "Accommodation, refractive error and eye growth in chickens” was said to have produced a paradigm shift in our understanding of regulation of refractive errors and ocular growth.
