Multiple Honors for Niels Birbaumer
For his plentiful groundbreaking contributions to clinical psychology and the neurobiology of learning, Niels Birbaumer (BFNT Freiburg-Tübingen) received no less than three major honors in 2010 (August 2010).
Niels Birbaumer is Director of the Institute for Medical Psychology and Behavioral Neurobiology at the Medical Faculty of the Eberhard Karls University Tübingen, where he also heads the Center for Magnetoencephalography (MEG).

Election as AAAS Fellow
The „American Association for the Advancement of Science“ (AAAS) elected Birbaumer as Fellow in the research area of psychology.
AAAS Fellows are recognized for their merituous efforts to advance science or its applications. In total, 561 scientists from various research areas were honored during the this year‘s AAAS Annual Meeting on February 20, 2010, in San Diego.
The AAAS is a non-profit organization dedicated to advancing science, engineering, and innovation throughout the world for the benefit of all people. It is also the publisher of the scientific journal Science.

Honorary doctoral degree of the University Jena
On May 11, 2010, the Faculty for Social and Behavioral Sciences of the Friedrich Schiller University Jena awarded the Doctor Honoris Causa degree to Niels Birbaumer "for his pioneering contributions to investigate cortical and subcortical structures of fear, his research work on the role of learning and memory as well as his studies on the development and evaluation of a behavior oriented psychotherapy".

Helmholtz Medal of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences und Humanities
For his scientific achievements in the field of biological psychology, particularly also for his research on the plasticity of the human brain, the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences and Humanities awards Niels Birbaumer with the Helmholtz Medal.
With the Helmholtz Medal, the Academy honors outstanding lifetime achievements in the fields of the humanities, social sciences, mathematics, and natural sciences, biology, medicine, and engineering. The medal can be awarded every second year.
