Bernstein Focus: Neuronal Basis of Learning (BFNL)

Insect inspired robots: towards an understanding of memory in decision making

This collaborative project combines theoretical and experimental approaches to investigate neuronal and computational mechanisms of learning, memory and decision-making in biological and artifical agents. The ultimate goal is to equip an autonomous robot with minimal implicit knowledge but with a biologically inspired learning-and-memory architecture allowing it to solve novel tasks of practical relevance. In insects, behavioural, neurophysiological, neuro-genetical and biochemical experiments shall elucidate the underlying biological mechanisms. Neuronal network approaches, reinforcement learning and machine learning methods will translate the derived biological concepts into control architectures of autonomous agents. 


The BFNL 'Memory in decision making' is a cooperation of scientists at the following research institutions:
